Blackle what?

I have written about environmental issues here on the site and the more I try to make a positive impact, I realize how much it requires a completely different approach to almost every aspect of our lives. I am at the point where I don’t even keep my alarm clock plugged in until I get ready for bed. What is the purpose of wasting energy by keeping small appliances plugged in during the day when you are not at home?

Moreover, I recently came across a website called blackle.com that is essentially a the home google screen where instead of the traditional white background, it is black. This idea was birthed by Mark who theorized on his blog no less, that if Google changed their background to black, it could save 750 megawatt hours per year. The rationale is simple, “An all white web page uses about 74 watts to display, while an all black page uses only 59 watts.”

In a previous piece, I remarked on benefits of expanding the almost wholly white environmental movement to include people of color. I asked the question, if you are a person of color and consider yourself “green,” what was your turning point? What are the different ways you attempt to lead a ‘greener’ lifestyle?

We only have one earth, let’s save it together,

Stay up fam,

Brandon Q.

For the record, the claim at Blackle is not really what it seems to be (though the concept is fair enough). You only see a benefit to having a blacked-out screen if you use an old-school CRT monitor (think pre-2001) as opposed to an LCD monitor (90% of new monitors purchased in the last 4 years are LCD monitors). On an LCD monitor, it actually takes more energy to display Black instead of white.

    Thanks for the clarification G,

Now I am thinking about the carbon footprint of The SuperSpade. When you think about it, with so many people spending hours reading The SuperSpade and assuming they have post 2001 monitors, what effect are we having on the environment?

I am so thankful to have smart friends.

    Touche my friend, touche.

Perhaps we should give people an option to use a background other than our Black and gray?

I’ll keep this in mind when we update the site design again.

Blackle is a great website! Its google but without the white! Plus it saves energy. My friends and I figure that if people start using Blackle more often, we could get an extra week of ecectricity.

There are around 25 different versions of “black google” online. The best one I’ve found is http://www.cleanblack.com. Cleanblack is the only version that allows you to change the text colors of the google search results. Try it yourself by going to http://www.cleanblack.com/theme/
