The Democrats in Congress acquiesced to Bush by agreeing to scuttle a timeline for withdrawing the troops. The bill does “include conditions prodding Baghdad to make better progress toward quelling violence or risk losing around $1.3 billion in U.S. reconstruction aid. Bush could waive the provision, however.”
Politically speaking, Democrats live to fight another day as House Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey of Wisconsin said Democrats will move the troop withdrawal fight to another bill.
The troops we are claiming to support don’t have the luxury to fight another day, enjoy family and friends over Memorial Day, or go on “recess” like the Iraqi parliament or US Congress. I know why it makes sense for Democrats to sort of let Bush bring down the GOP but with majorities (albeit slim) in both chambers, they have the power of the purse to severely curtail Bush’s John Wayne nightmare.
I don’t want the Democrats to make the political mistake of saying, “If you really want to end the war, elect a Democrat for President.” This logic would involve Democrats offering only symbolic efforts to end the war and telling the public, “What else do you want, at least we tried.” Try again Democrats because the honeymoon might not last until January 20, 2009.
Stay up fam,
