Do you think Bush could be in office past January 20, 2009? I do and so does Bush apparently. An article from Alternet.org reads,
The National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive, signed on May 9, 2007, would place all governmental power in the hands of the President and effectively abolish the checks and balances in the Constitution.
You can read the text of the directive here. To be clear, this governmental power would only be exercised in the event of a “catastrophic emergency.” Conveniently, ‘catastrophic emergency’ is defined is
“Any incident, regardless of location, that results in extraordinary levels of mass casualties, damage, or disruption severely affecting the U.S. population, infrastructure, environment, economy, or government functions.”
Two questions arise for me. For starters, how are we defining extraordinary levels of mass casualties? Does the war in Iraq embody this definition? Secondly, the disregard for location is troubling because according to this logic, if Russia were to severely limit gas supplies resulting in a severe spike in gas prices affecting the US economy, this would be grounds for enacting the goals of the directive. Can you think of any other situations where Bush could further shore up the goals of a unitary executive? Are you worried?
Stay up fam,
